Nigerian Comedian Destalker Opens Up About Struggles with Depression and Suicide Attempts

Destalker Reveals Challenges Faced After Graduation and Journey to Comedy Success

Nigerian comedian Oghenekowhoyan Onaibe Desmond, popularly known as Destalker, has bravely shared his personal battles with depression and multiple suicide attempts, shedding light on the often-hidden struggles faced by individuals behind the spotlight.

In a candid revelation, Destalker disclosed that he grappled with suicidal thoughts on three separate occasions, attributing his mental health challenges to a combination of post-graduation unemployment and family pressures.

The 39-year-old public administration graduate recounted the daunting transition from university to the harsh realities of joblessness, which led him to pursue unconventional means of livelihood, including working as a commercial motorcyclist, commonly referred to as “okada.”

Reflecting on his journey, Destalker emphasized the weight of societal expectations and personal aspirations, stating, “I graduated with a degree in Public Administration but couldn’t get a job. So I started doing okada. But the truth is, I already had it on my mind that I don’t want to work for anybody.”

Amidst financial struggles and familial tensions, Destalker found himself engulfed in a downward spiral of despair, culminating in three harrowing suicide attempts. However, these dark moments ultimately became transformative, instilling in him a newfound resilience and belief in the proximity of his breakthrough.

Sharing his profound realization during an episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, Destalker expressed, “I was struggling. It wasn’t easy. There were a lot of distractions and it got to a point where I was suicidal. I attempted suicide three times. I think nobody has heard this part of me. That was when I realized that even I can’t take my life.”
