PFA Awards Shortlists Revealed: Haaland, Saka, and James Lead Nominations

LONDON, September 8, 2023 – The Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) has unveiled the shortlists for its prestigious awards, recognizing the exceptional achievements of football players over the past calendar year. A notable change this year is the shift from considering performances over a season to evaluating accomplishments across a full year.

Erling Haaland, Bukayo Saka, Rachel Daly, and Sam Kerr stand out among the nominees for the PFA Player of the Year awards in both men’s and women’s categories. The nominees for the PFA Young Player of the Year awards include emerging talents like Gabriel Martinelli, Jacob Ramsey, Evan Ferguson, Moises Caicedo, Lauren James, Lauren Hemp, Katie Robinson, Maya Le Tissier, Laura Blindkilde, and Missy Bo Kearns.

In the men’s category, the spotlight is on Manchester City following their triumphant 2022/23 season. Erling Haaland, Kevin De Bruyne, and John Stones, all instrumental to City’s historic treble-winning campaign, feature in the shortlist. Harry Kane, who moved on from Tottenham, and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard round out the six-player list.

Haaland’s debut season in English football, amassing an astonishing 52 goals, has propelled him to the forefront of recognition. De Bruyne’s 49 appearances, with 10 goals and 31 assists, exemplified his enduring impact, while Stones’ robust defensive performances fortified City’s backline.

In the women’s category, Aston Villa’s Rachel Daly shines for her transformation into a centre-forward, netting an impressive 22 goals and clinching the Women’s Super League top scorer title. Chelsea’s Sam Kerr, along with her teammates Lauren James and Guro Reiten, as well as Arsenal’s Frida Maanum, Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw, and former Manchester United defender Ona Battle, complete the strong shortlist.

Khadija Shaw’s prolific run of 31 goals in 30 games across all competitions stands out, showcasing Manchester City’s attacking prowess.
