The recent viral story claiming a 114% increase in the salaries of President Bola Tinubu, Vice President, elected Federal and State political office holders, and judicial officers has been discredited. The Office of the Special Adviser to the President, through Dele Alake, has categorically stated that no salary increase has been approved by President Tinubu, and no such proposal has been presented for consideration.
While acknowledging that the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) holds the constitutional mandate to propose and determine salaries and allowances of political office holders and judicial officers, it is important to highlight that any changes in remuneration require the approval of the President to come into effect.
The RMAFC, through its Public Relations Manager, has already clarified this misinformation and set the record straight. However, the unfounded story gained traction on social media and some sections of the mainstream media, underscoring the dangers of fake news and its negative impact on society and national well-being.
It is evident that this fabricated narrative was intentionally created to generate ill will towards the new administration and impede the positive momentum and widespread support that the Tinubu-led administration currently enjoys among Nigerians due to its dynamic and progressive policies.
In light of this incident, journalists, media managers, and the public are urged to disregard stories related to government activities and policy matters that do not originate from approved official communication channels. Responsible journalism entails verifying information before reporting, ensuring accuracy, and maintaining the integrity of news dissemination.
Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications & Strategy, reiterated these points and called for conscientious reporting practices to uphold the principles of credible journalism.
