Afrobeat Heir Warns “Wizkid FC” to Stop “Insulting” His Father’s Legacy
Grammy-nominated Afrobeat singer Seun Kuti has issued a sharp rebuke to fans of superstar Wizkid, urging them to stop comparing the Afrobeats icon to his late father, the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, calling the parallels an “insult” born of ignorance.
In a passionate Instagram livestream, Kuti directly addressed the so-called “Wizkid FC,” telling them to “keep Fela’s name out of your mouths.” He argued that such comparisons undermine the unique and revolutionary legacy of the Afrobeat pioneer.
“You try to claim that your fake artiste is the new Fela. Then when you people saw that the shoes were too big to fill… It is actually an insult,” Kuti stated. He attributed the fans’ behavior to a “lack of respect” stemming from ignorance rather than defiant critique.
Kuti also expressed frustration with how fan rivalries, particularly what he called “the most ignorant fanbase in the world,” have negatively impacted the music industry, stifling potential collaborations between artists.
“Do you know why you cannot enjoy your artist’s music without comparing it to something else?” he challenged the fans. “It is because the music does not fill your spirit. You can pretend to be enjoying it, but spiritually, you are not satisfied.”
The intervention highlights the ongoing cultural conversation about the distinction between Afrobeats—the globally popular genre—and the politically charged, musically complex Afrobeat tradition founded by Fela. For Kuti, the comparison isn’t just inaccurate; it’s a profound disrespect to a legacy built on activism, innovation, and artistic courage.
