Simi Clarifies Relationship with Falz and Opens Up About Her Transition from Gospel to Secular Music

The talented songstress, Simisola Kosoko, popularly known as Simi, has put to rest rumors about her dating Nigerian rapper Falz as she sheds light on the true nature of their relationship. Simi, in an interview segment on MTV Base Africa’s programme, Official Naija Top 10, stated that the chemistry and easy flow observed in their music led fans to speculate about a romantic connection, but in reality, they were never really dating.

Simi explained, “He [Falz] did a verse on my song, ‘JAMB Question Remix.’ And I was like, ‘Ah! Me and this guy, there is a vibe there.’ So, we did ‘Soldier,’ and everybody was like, the chemistry is so amazing. We never saw that. People bought what we were not selling. And we were like, okay, this is a strategy. So, we did ‘Chemistry’ the album. People gave us the name and the idea. We never actually came and say, oh, we are dating.”

On the subject of her past as a gospel artist, Simi shared her struggles during that phase. She recalled being paid meager amounts ranging from N5,000 to N10,000 for performances at various churches. The highest amount she ever received as a gospel artist was N70,000, which she considered a significant sum at the time. Despite the financial challenges, Simi made sure to tithe 10 percent of her earnings.

“I actually used to go to a lot of churches to perform. They will pay me like N5k, N10k. Do you know the highest amount of money I actually collected when I was doing gospel [music]? N70,000. And I felt like I had arrived. I still paid a 10 percent tithe from the money,” Simi revealed.
