Tiwa Savage Declines the Crown: Why The Star Rejects the ‘Queen of Afrobeats’ Title

In a humble and empowering move, the Nigerian music icon insists the genre has many queens and that the label comes with too much weight.

Nigerian superstar Tiwa Savage has gracefully declined the honorary title of “Queen of Afrobeats,” explaining that she finds the label both uncomfortable and unjust to her peers.

In a recent candid interview with Apple Music’s Ebro, the celebrated singer expressed deep gratitude for the recognition from her fans but clarified that she does not accept the crown. Her primary reason is a sense of solidarity, acknowledging the multitude of talented female artists shaping the globally celebrated genre.

“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” Savage stated. She attributed the title likely stemming from her role as one of the first female artists to achieve major breakthrough success in Nigeria’s competitive music scene.

While appreciative of the honor, which she says she “doesn’t take for granted,” Savage revealed the title comes with a weight of responsibility she feels is better shared. She explained that accepting it would require a level of humility and, ultimately, “it doesn’t make sense” to her when the Afrobeats scene is rich with other leading women deserving of recognition.

Her comments have been celebrated by fans as a humble and unifying stance, reinforcing the idea that Afrobeats is a kingdom with many queens.
