Transfer gossip: Man Utd to try again for Rabiot as Liverpool also move for a former target

Manchester United and Liverpool are both going back through their list of old targets, while Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival will be too late to prolong Mason Mount’s Chelsea career…

UNITED RE-ENTER RABIOT RACE
Manchester United don’t appear to have held a grudge towards Adrien Rabiot or his Mum since reports suggest the Red Devils are keen to try once more to sign the France midfielder.

Erik ten Hag wanted Rabiot last summer when United agreed a fee in the region of £15million with Juventus. But when John Murtough flew to Turin to meet the player’s mother, who acts as his representative, the Rabiots were demanding mega money to move to Old Trafford.

United walked away and signed Casemiro instead, which turned out to be a masterstroke. But L’Equipe says United will try again this summer to sign Rabiot, who is out of contract at Juventus. Thy should be prepared, though, because the player’s Ma will be likely be asking for even more since Rabiot will be moving as a free agent having been an important player for Juve this season.

LIVERPOOL REKINDLE INTEREST IN CROATIA DEFENDER
Liverpool are also sniffing around old targets while the vultures pick through the carcass at Southampton.

According to Fichajes, the Reds will look to sign Duje Caleta-Car. They wanted the Croatia centre-back in 2021, during the dark winter of Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak. Indeed, a deal had been agreed between Liverpool and Marseille but the French side pulled out over concerns they would not be able to source a replacement so close to the deadline.

Caleta-Car belatedly arrived in the Premier League last summer with Southampton but the centre-back has been powerless to stop Saints sliding into the second tier. Liverpool, though, want to spare Caleta-Car the Championship and are said to be ready to pay the £12million it might cost to land the 26-year-old.

POCH TO LATE TO KEEP MOUNT
Chelsea are expected to confirm Mauricio Pochettino as their latest victim manager this week, with the Argentinian said to have flown to London to sign a three-year agreement with the Blues.

Pochettino’s arrival, though, comes too late to save contract negotiations with Mason Mount. The England attacker is due to enter the final year of his contract this summer and Todd Boehly won’t let him get much closer to free agency. With no renewal on the horizon, Chelsea will look to cash in, as Liverpool and Arsenal lurk. It was thought Poch’s arrival might prompt further talks with Mount but apparently it would take a ‘miracle’ to get the 24-year-old to the table again with relations between the player’s camp and Chelsea at ‘an all-time low’.

Pochettino’s first job will be to find a striker and no amount of goals Romelu Lukaku scores for Inter between now and the end of the season will change that. Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea will sign a new no.9 this summer regardless of what lies ahead for Lukaku.
