South African Star Edges Out Nigerian Heavyweights, Celebrating a Triumphant Night for the Continent
In a stunning repeat victory, South African singer Tyla has once again claimed the Grammy for Best African Music Performance, solidifying her status as a global force. At the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, her energetic track “Push 2 Start” triumphed over a formidable lineup of nominees, including Nigerian superstars Burna Boy, Davido, and Ayra Starr.
This win marks Tyla’s second consecutive trophy in the category, following her breakout success last year with the viral hit “Water.” The back-to-back victories make her the category’s most decorated artist since its creation, a testament to her soaring popularity and the resonating sound of her music.
“This is unbelievable,” Tyla said, holding the golden gramophone. “To be recognized like this again, standing for South Africa and for all of Africa, is more than a dream. It shows our sound is being heard everywhere.”
The category was established to amplify African artists on music’s biggest stage, and Tyla’s success underscores the continent’s booming influence. The celebratory night for African music didn’t end with her win. In a moving tribute, legendary Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti was posthumously honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, reminding the world of the rich, enduring legacy from which today’s stars draw inspiration.
Together, Tyla’s contemporary triumph and Fela’s timeless recognition painted a powerful picture of African music’s past, present, and thrilling future.
