UK and France Reportedly Revive Talks on Troop Deployment to Ukraine – Le Monde reports

Discussions stir NATO tensions as Western involvement in the conflict resurfaces.

The UK and France are reportedly revisiting discussions on potentially deploying troops to Ukraine, according to French newspaper Le Monde. The move signals a controversial shift in Western involvement in the conflict, which has already sparked divisions within NATO.

French President Emmanuel Macron first raised the possibility of sending ground troops to Ukraine in February, stating his willingness “to prevent Russia from winning this war.” The proposal drew sharp criticism, with NATO distancing itself from the idea, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz affirming a unanimous Western stance against such a deployment at the time.

Talks Reactivated

The idea appeared shelved until British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent visit to Paris reignited discussions. Citing unnamed sources, Le Monde reported that Starmer and Macron “reactivated” the conversation during their meeting, though specifics remain unclear.

The potential scope of deployment reportedly ranges from sending technicians to repair military equipment, employing private military contractors, or even deploying flag-wearing military personnel on the ground. Such involvement could include front-line operations or peacekeeping roles in the event of a ceasefire.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot hinted at the possibility, telling the BBC that Paris is “not ruling out any option” when directly questioned about troop deployment. A British military source echoed similar sentiments, describing ongoing Franco-British discussions aimed at strengthening European defense cooperation focused on Ukraine and regional security.

Implications for the Conflict

Russia has long alleged that Western personnel are already assisting Ukraine, particularly in operating advanced weaponry. Russian President Vladimir Putin has noted that Ukraine’s long-range missile strikes into Russian territory are unlikely without Western support.

This claim gained traction last week when Ukraine used American ATACMS and British Storm Shadow missiles in attacks on Russian soil. Putin warned that such actions have introduced “elements of a global nature” to the conflict and reiterated that Russia would retaliate against any nation allowing its weapons to be used against it.

Following these strikes, Russia launched a hypersonic Oreshnik missile at a military facility in Dnipro, signaling its intent to escalate in response to Western-backed actions.

A Divisive Proposal

The revival of troop deployment discussions could exacerbate tensions within NATO. While some members remain cautious about direct involvement, others argue for a more assertive stance to support Ukraine.

As the situation evolves, the potential for direct Western military involvement underscores the broader implications of the conflict, raising questions about NATO’s cohesion and the risks of further escalation.
