Russia Claims to Have Shot Down Over 140 Ukrainian Drones in Widespread Attack
Ukraine unleashed over 140 drones on Russia overnight, killing one woman near Moscow and disrupting air traffic, according to Russian officials. The drone barrage, one of the largest since the conflict began, triggered air defense systems across several Russian regions, grounding flights and causing widespread panic.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence reported that it had shot down 144 drones in various regions, including 72 in Bryansk, 20 in Moscow, 14 in Kursk, 13 in Tula, and 25 in other areas. Moscow’s regional governor, Andrey Vorobyov, confirmed the death of a 46-year-old woman and injuries to several others after a drone struck high-rise buildings in the Ramenskoye district, located about 30 miles southeast of the Kremlin.
Videos shared on social media showed flames engulfing apartments in the aftermath of the attack. “I saw a ball of fire. The window got blown out by the shockwave,” one resident, Alexander Li, told Reuters.
As a result of the attack, four major airports servicing Moscow, including Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo, canceled or delayed flights. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin confirmed that a fire had broken out at Zhukovsky airfield, caused by debris from a downed drone.
In the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, local authorities reported a “massive terrorist attack” but said all drone strikes were repelled with no casualties or damage. Russia’s defense ministry described the strikes as acts of “terrorism” targeting civilian infrastructure.
This wave of drone attacks comes just a week after one of Ukraine’s darkest days, when two Russian ballistic missiles killed at least 51 people in a central Ukrainian region. The strikes hit a military training center and a nearby hospital, prompting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to vow that “Russian scum will pay for this.”
As the war continues to intensify, Ukraine has ramped up drone attacks on Russian energy, military, and transport infrastructure, leveraging its rapidly growing domestic drone industry. While Kyiv asserts its right to strike deep into Russia in response to the 2022 invasion, Western allies have cautioned against escalation that could lead to direct conflict between NATO and Russia.
Tuesday’s attack targeted multiple Russian regions, including Bryansk, Kursk, and Tula, disrupting infrastructure but largely avoiding significant damage.
