Blow for Bayer Leverkusen as Victor Boniface Faces Extended Spell on the Sidelines

Xabi Alonso’s High-Flying Side Set to Miss Prolific Forward Until April Due to International Duty Injury

Bayer Leverkusen, led by manager Xabi Alonso, is bracing for an extended period without the services of star forward Victor Boniface, who is expected to be sidelined until April following an injury sustained during international duty with Nigeria.

Initially, Leverkusen had anticipated being without Boniface until mid-February, as the 23-year-old was part of Nigeria’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. However, the striker suffered a groin injury during training in Dubai, prompting an early return to Germany. A subsequent MRI scan in Cologne on Tuesday revealed the severity of the injury, necessitating corrective surgery and ruling him out of action for an extended period.

Boniface, who made a notable impact since his summer transfer from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, has been a key figure for Alonso’s Werkself outfit. In just 16 Bundesliga appearances, the 6’3″ attacker has contributed significantly with 10 goals and seven assists, playing an instrumental role in Leverkusen’s ascent to the top of the Bundesliga standings.

The forward’s impressive form extended beyond domestic competitions, with four goals in the UEFA Europa League and an additional two in the DFB Cup, showcasing his importance as Leverkusen remains in contention for silverware on multiple fronts.
