New measures aim to improve transparency and address consumer concerns.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced the rollout of a new tariff plan for telecom operators, set to take effect on December 13, 2024. The initiative is designed to simplify options for consumers and address common complaints about data and airtime usage.

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday, November 28, the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Aminu Maida, disclosed the development during a press briefing. The plan, originally scheduled for announcement in October, was postponed to ensure proper preparation.

“The new tariff structure is designed to bring relief to telecom users by making it easier to understand and navigate offerings,” Dr. Maida stated.

Under the new guidelines, telecom operators will be limited to a maximum of seven tariff plans. This measure aims to eliminate the confusion caused by the overwhelming number of options currently available.

Addressing a major consumer grievance, the EVC clarified that telecom operators are not responsible for rapid data depletion, which is often linked to the type of device being used. To tackle this issue, the NCC has launched public awareness campaigns to educate consumers about managing their data usage and selecting devices that align with their needs.

The NCC’s latest move underscores its commitment to creating a transparent and consumer-friendly telecommunications market in Nigeria, ensuring users can make informed choices and enjoy better value for their money.
