Afrobeat Icon Urges African Countries to Ban Badenoch from the Continent
Nigerian Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has called on African governments to bar Kemi Badenoch, leader of the United Kingdom’s Conservative Party, from visiting the continent. His comments came in response to remarks Badenoch made distancing herself from Nigeria, describing the nation as corrupt and emphasizing her lack of connection with the northern region of the country, which faces challenges from Boko Haram insurgency.
Badenoch’s statement was reportedly a rebuttal to criticism from Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima and others who accused her of disrespecting her ancestral heritage.
During a live Instagram session, Seun Kuti expressed outrage over Badenoch’s comments, saying they insulted Nigerians and dishonored the memory of their ancestors. He stated:
“She’s someone who should be banned by African governments from stepping into Africa. Once she steps into Africa, she should be jailed.”
Kuti further criticized Badenoch for allegedly suggesting that Africans should compensate Europeans for the impacts of colonialism, a position he strongly condemned as dismissive of the atrocities committed against African peoples.
Kuti’s remarks have ignited discussions online, with reactions both supporting and opposing his stance on the UK minister’s contentious statements. The issue highlights ongoing tensions surrounding historical colonial legacies and the identities of public figures with African heritage.
